Do you have your notebooks, pencil, and pens? What about a fresh new chapter book? Here are just a handful of books that kids love this year!

The Giver by Lois Lowry has been a popular book for all ages and interests this summer. Many schools have students read this in class, so if you somehow missed this enriching experience, now is a good time to pick it up and dive in. It’s a timeless story of Jonas, a boy who is a part of a society hiding under the guise of a utopia, and struggles with his own inherent beliefs and individuality.

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown is a heartwarming and tear-jerking story about a Robot named Roz who finds itself lost in the wilderness, struggling with understanding the ways of nature. Not only is this book suited for kids, but it is also a good book for adults. The life lessons and emotional connections that are in this book will have you rethinking your own relationships.

Smile by Raina Telgemeier is a very coming-of-age story full of drama, humor, and unforgettable characters. As a sixth grader, Raina has to battle an unfortunate accident with her teeth and on-and-off braces along with school, boy troubles, and failing friendships. This comic book set up makes for an eye-catching story for students.

The Percy Jackson & the Olympians book series by Rick Riordan has been one of my most beloved fantasy series growing up. The series focuses on Percy, who is a demigod, the son of Poseidon, and his adventures and quests that he must face with his close friends. In the The Lightning Thief, Percy must face Zeus’s wrath as he races against time to find and return a stolen lightning bolt. The danger and excitement in this book will keep you on your toes, and you will always want more of these books. You won't be able to stop at Book 1!

Ghost by Jason Reynolds is another book that is often read in schools since it was written in 2016. It is a story focused on a young boy named Ghost who has always loved running. It has always been something that he is good at, whether he wanted to or not. Running from his past, including his abusive father, Ghost must decide if he will face his past or let it consume him. However, joining the track team helps him address these challenging issues and move forward. This book will have you in tears as you cheer Ghost on for his bravery and drive.
