Meet: LAURA SPARROW, Head of Account Services at BRPL!

Q: Tell us about your history working on behalf of the Boca Raton Public Library. A: I have been working in circulation/ account services at the Boca Raton Public Library for over two years, and was recently promoted to Head of Account Services in September.  As part of the account services team I help promote literacy skills for library patrons.  Some of the programs at the library I am currently involved with include Library Card Outreach programs with various schools in the area and City employee events. I coordinated our first Veterans Outreach program called ‘Military Intel’ which provides veterans and their families with important information about their benefits and services available for them in the community. Q: What projects have you worked on that are particularly memorable? A: Before joining the staff at BRPL, I worked as the Educational Grant Manager for SUMMIT at the University of Central Florida, a program sponsored by the Florida Department of Education that provides training and guidance to teachers and other educators throughout Florida to use Inquiry Method of teaching.  It was gratifying to part of a team to  evaluate and improve the classroom experience for Florida students, particularly in the areas of math and science, to help them become successful learners and leaders.

Q:  What is something people might not know about you? A: I served 20 years with the U.S. Navy, a combination of Active and Reserve Duty, as an Aviation Structural Mechanic, Aircrew Member, and finally, as Reserve Command Career Counselor, where I helped steer sailors' career development, and worked with aviation experts to create command training materials and run safety programs.  I was able to complete my education in ESE and Elementary Education at Flagler College using the Montgomery GI Bill, and have taught in Palm Beach County, Flagler County, and St. Johns County at elementary, middle, and high schools.

I hope to earn a Master's Degree in Library Science from the online MSLS program at the University of South Florida to further my love of learning and growing at the Boca Raton Public Library.
