FRIENDS OF BOCA LIBRARY AWARD SCHOLARSHIP!

On Tuesday, January 5, the Friends of the Boca Raton Public Library held their second annual Scholarship Award Breakfast for Spanish River and Downtown Library staff. At the breakfast, Janet Klingler, President of the Friends, awarded a scholarship to four library staff members; Oyuki DeSantiago, Theresa Rockett, Carol Rynk and Marcella Trevino.
The Friends Scholarship program was established in 2009 to provide staff members the opportunity to attend the Florida Library Association Annual Conference. At this conference, librarians can attend seminars to hone their technical skills and learn ways to improve their service to patrons. Award winner, Marcella Trevino, librarian in Reference Services at Spanish River Library, is hoping to improve her skills in her area of interest by attending sessions specifically related to Florida. Oyuki DeSantiago, who has worked in Youth Services for two years, stated, "The conference is a great environment in which to share ideas with other library professionals."
Patricia Michalski, Patron Services Librarian, said, "The candidates were selected based on their responses to questions regarding the benefits of attending the Florida Library Association Annual Conference." Ms. Michalski further stated that "Due to budget constraints, education and training opportunities for Library staff are limited. Thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Library, four members of the Boca Raton Public Library staff will have a chance to expand their knowledge of Library service."
The conference this year will be held in Orlando in early April. The scholarships, totaling $2,000 will cover the cost of transportation, hotels and seminar registration.
Friends Bookstore Now Open!
The Friends Bookstore is now open in its new location on the second floor of the Downtown Library!
Bookstore hours:
Tuesdays: 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.
Wednesdays: 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.
Thursdays: 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Fridays and Saturdays: 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m.
All proceeds will benefit the Boca Raton Public Library.

During the summer reading event in 2009, almost 1,500 children participated and read approximately 18,000 books! Five hundred teens and tweens also took part in Friends-sponsored events.
